Cliff Bales maintained his lead Friday, to become Sumner County’s next district No. 3 commissioner.
After votes were canvassed and made official, Bales, of Oxford, beat out Stan Burdett of Caldwell by just six votes.
In unofficial results Tuesday night, Bales received 364 votes, with Burdett only two votes behind him with 362 votes. Randy Wyckoff of Wellington received 282 votes.
Bales won the Republican nomination for the seat and will become the next commissioner, barring a write in campaign by a democrat.
According to the Sumner County Clerk’s office, after provisional ballots were counted the official results had Bales winning with 368 votes to Burdett’s 362. Bales received four provisional votes while Burdett received none. Wyckoff received only one provisional vote, putting him at 283.
Shortly after the canvass was over, Bales expressed his joy at remaining in the top spot.
“I’m elated,” he said. “It was nerve-racking.”
Bales had one thought going through his head during the canvass.
“Hurry up,” he said laughing. “Everything takes time. It was just nerve-racking being that close and not knowing,”
Burdett told the Wellington News he would not request a recount, should the results not go his way.
“I don’t want to play that game and I trust the people that are doing the counting and if I lose by one or two or 100, it only takes one as far as I’m concerned so it makes no difference. I support what the people have voted for and I hope it turns out,” said Burdett.
Candidates from the 2010 Primary election have until noon, Monday to request a recount, Sumner County Clerk Debra Norris said.
With no democratic nominee to run against during the general election, Bales says he is pleased with the results of the election and eager to start on the commission in January.
“I’d start tomorrow if we didn’t have to wait until January. It’s something I feel lead to do and we stayed on our messages, we didn’t go negative. I’m just shocked it’s so close,” said Bales.
The Oxford man says he’s been preparing for the commission seat for years and will continue to do so in the upcoming months.
“I’ve been on planning and zoning and environmental health for what will be 10 years by then and I’ve been in on every casino meeting, all the planning commission meetings...watched it all unfold. I’ll see how it goes. I like some of it and some not so much...anybody would be the same if they sat in that position, I’m sure, for a while. Same with the clerk or the treasurer or anybody else. There are things you would change if it became yours,” he said.
Bales had a message for those that voted for him.
“Thanks for the support, thanks for all the help and we’ll try and do the very best job possible for the County.”
