Arthur Junior Nutt was born October 16, 1924 to Arthur V. and Marie Charlotte Elizabeth (Schultz) Nutt in Wellington, Kansas. Arthur worked for Ed Nation’s Grocery store in Wellington from the time he was a freshman in high school. He graduated in 1943 and two weeks later went into the Service. Arthur served two and a half years in the Army flying in B17’s as a waste gunner, and later became an instructor on B29’s. He flew over Germany bombing in World War Two, stationed in England.
Arthur went back to work at Nation’s Grocery Store for four more years making a total of 8 years in Grocery work, when he met Claudine M. Lupton after the war. His best friend, Bo Heaten, was dating Claudine’s cousin, Wanda Kile, and they introduced Claudine and Arthur to each other. They dated quite steadily for
two weeks. Claudine was living in Wichita on Madison Street and working for an aircraft plant, Davis Westholdt, for three years when she met Arthur. Claudine was wearing a pink and white striped dress when they met each other. After two weeks of dating, Claudine told Arthur she had to go back to Washington, D.C. with her mother. Arthur asked her to stay and marry him. She said yes, and they were married at the First Presbyterian Church in Wichita on June 25, 1946. They resided at 801 S. Washington, Wellington, KS.
After they were married, that night they went to Wichita to a night club called the “Blue Moon” and Claudine’s best friend Virginia Jeeter gave up her apartment and went to her mother’s house for Claudine’s and Arthurs wedding night. Arthur
went to work the next day at the Grocery Store and told his boss he got married. His boss said “you’ll be no good today” and gave him time off. Claudine and Arthur left for Colorado Springs the next day after telling their folks they had gotten married. It was a beautiful Harvest day when they went on their Honeymoon!
