Helen M. Jones, 7100 Anderson Avenue, died Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan, Kansas at the age of 81 years from complications due to her battle with cancer.
Helen Marie Daniels was born March 21, 1930 in Wellington, Kansas, the first child of Estus Cecil and Ethel Pauline (McDonald) Daniels. She attended the public schools and graduated from Wellington High School in 1948. From there she matriculated to Bethany, Oklahoma, where she studied at Bethany Peniel College and earned a B.A. degree in religion in 1952. For a time she worked for Dr. Cole in Wellington and engaged in lay preaching for Church of the Nazarene congregations in the area. On July 10, 1953, she married Richard Andrew Jones in Wellington, Kansas. In the summer of 1955, they moved to Manhattan, Kansas, where her husband soon enrolled in the School of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University. During her time in Manhattan, Helen worked in the offices of Dr. White and Manhattan Reliable Transfer. In 1961, she moved to Freeman, South Dakota where Dr. Jones practiced veterinary medicine for the next thirty years. During those years she raised her family and was very involved with Bethany Mennonite Church and the Dorcas Society. Later, she became involved with local education as a member, and then served as president for a term, of the Freeman Public School Board in the mid-1970s. In 1976, she returned to college at the University of South Dakota where she earned a M.S. in Selected Studies in 1979. She worked in geriatric social work at the Freeman Community Hospital for several years before going to work as a psychiatric counselor at the South Dakota Human Services Center in Yankton in 1984. During these years she was involved and provided leadership for professional organizations such as the South Dakota Counseling Association. In 1981 she participated on the President’s Council on Aging in Washington, D.C. and helped write what became national aging policy in the 1980s. In 1995 she retired and moved to Grove, Oklahoma, where she became very active in the state’s largest
Senior Citizens Center and joined the First United Methodist Church, where she served as a lay care minister and as a leader in the United Methodist Women’s Fellowship, and was active in the Fellowship Sunday School Class. Also during her time in Grove, she became involved as an advocate and mediator in the Delaware County court system and, in 2010, was name Early Settlement Volunteer of the Year in the State of Oklahoma. In addition, to her many professional and volunteer activities, Helen loved to travel and enjoyed many tours and cruises in her later years.

She was preceded in death by both of her parents, her spouse, and one sister, Virginia Jacobs.Survivors include her son, the Rev. Dr. David A. Jones (Linda) of Manhattan, KS, and daughter, Janice K. Burk (Keith) of Yelm, WA. Five grandchildren including Nathan A. Jones of Manhattan, KS, Lindsey L. Jones of Ames, IA, Ryan T. Burk, Justin M. Burk and Ashley D. Burk of Yelm, WA. Also two sisters, Betty Ramsey (Kenneth) of Grove, OK, Barbara Stonehocker of Wellington, KS and one brother, Larry Daniels (Gloria) of Grove, OK. Also 3 sister-in-laws, one aunt, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, January 6th, at the Yorgensen-Meloan- Londeen Funeral Chapel in Manhattan with the Reverend Paul J. Allen, IV officiating. Graveside services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Friday at the Penwell Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum in Hutchinson, KS, with the Reverend Kim Biery officiating.
The family of Mrs. Jones will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 P.M. Thursday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.
