This morning's fire caused $23,000 in damages to the house at 816 E. Lincoln, the blaze was started by children playing with a lighter, according to the Wellington Fire Department.
The house is owned by Beverly Walta, and there were eight people occupying the home. No one was seriously injured during the incident, one female did receive minor burns.
"Upon arrival [we] found fire showing through the front door and windows on the front portion of the house," states a press release from Fire Chief, Tim Hay. "Fire spread rapidly throughout the entire structure. Heavy fire, smoke, and water damage throughout the home." Firefighters employed several water hoses to tame the fire, and protect the neighboring house to the West, which also received about $1,500 in damage from the flames. The fire department says this incident could have been a lot worse.
"There was no working smoke detectors in the home," Hay said. "If this fire occurred earlier when the occupants were asleep there could have been injuries or deaths." The occupants did not have renters insurance and the fire department is still seeking the owner to determine if there was insurance on the home. The firefighters did rescue a puppy from the basement of the house, gave it oxygen, and the owners took it to the vet.
Sumner County Emergency Management, Wellington Electric Department, Wellington Police, Wellington Public Works, and the American Red Cross assisted during the incident. The Mayfield Fire Department provided mutual aid. The Wellington Fire Department provides smoke detectors at no cost.
