Larry Quickel passed away on Friday, November 11, 2011 at Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville, Georgia, he was 74.
Mr. Quickel was born on June 15, 1937 in Woodward, Oklahoma to Herbert Jesse Quickel and Edna Pauline Duggin Quickel. He was a 1956 graduate of Wellington (KS) High School where he was a standout football and baseball player. Mr. Quickel went on to attend Emporia State University in Emporia, KS where he played football, baseball and was a member of the swim team. Quickel graduated from Emporia State with a bachelor’s degree in Business Education in 1960. He later went on to earn his master’s degree, also in Business Education from Emporia State.
Quickel began his career as a high school business teacher andcoach. He held positions in Tampa, Natoma, Tescott, Carbondale and Burlington high schools, all in Kansas. In 1962 he led the Carbondale Vikings to their most wins in school history (at the time) with a 5- 1-2 record, finishing second in the Osage County League. Quickel was named the Topeka Capital Journal Kansas high school coach of the week in October of 1966 when he led then unranked class B - Burlington to a stunning upset of top ranked class A - Neodesha, who was sporting a 32 game win streak.
In 1968 Quickel joined the burgeoning pharmaceutical industry as a sales representative for Eaton Laboratories, which later became Procter & Gamble Pharmaceuticals. He won several awards during his distinguished career and held positions of increasing responsibility as his sales career took him from; Topeka, KS to Overland Park, KS, Tallahassee, Florida and Atlanta, Georgia, where he retired after 35 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Pauline, both of Wellington, KS. He is survived by his wife, Pauline of Dacula, Georgia, a sister, Carol Smolar (husband Jim) of Wellington, KS, two sons; Jay (wife Julie A.) of Overland Park, KS & Jerry (wife Julie M.) of Olathe, KS, five grandchildren; Jake & Haley of Olathe, KS and Jesse, Juliana & Jack of Overland Park, KS and three nieces.
A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, January 14th, 2012 at Colonial Presbyterian Church, 12501 W. 137th St. (off of 135th St. at the corner of Rosehill St. & 137th Court), Overland Park, KS 66221. A reception will be held immediately following at the St. Andrews Golf Course, 11099 W. 135th St., Overland Park, KS 66221.
