Marjorie Ellen Phillippi Johnson
Marjorie Ellen Phillippi Johnson was born on the family farm south of Argonia, Kansas on April 20, 1920 to Bertram and Florence (Winchell) Phillippi and departed this life on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at the age of 89. She was the only daughter and youngest of eight children. She attended and graduated from the Garden Prairie Grade School, Argonia High School and two years at Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas. She taught three years at the Lincoln School southeast of Argonia.
She was married to Wayne Johnson on January 26, 1943, and then later joined him at Fort Riley where he was stationed at the time. While at Fort Riley, their son Earl Byron was born. When Wayne was sent overseas, Marjorie and Earl came back to Argonia to live. After Wayne returned from the service, they settled in Argonia where Wayne had the Standard Station with his father. While living in Argonia, their son Robert Leon was born and later more joy was added to their family by the birth of their daughter Ann Edra.
On April 19, 1958, Wayne was appointed Postmaster where he served twenty five years until April 30, 1983 when he retired from the post office as well as farming.
Marjorie was a devoted and loving wife and mother. She enjoyed her home and family, gardening and flowers. Her family enjoyed her wonderful home cooked meals and especially her home canned green beans, tomatoes and pickles which she served when they came home.
She was an active member of the Argonia Friends Church which she attended and served from childhood through the many years of her life. Marjorie enjoyed the Study Club, Women's Missionary as well as the Sunday School and church services. She also was a member of the Argonia VFW Auxiliary. She was interested in the community and country and making them a better place to live.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Wayne and her seven brothers, Murrell, Paul, Don, Carl, Bryson, James and Dean.
Survivors include her son, Earl Byron Johnson and his wife Virginia of Garden Grove, California, son, Robert Leon Johnson and his wife Ann of Houston, Texas, daughter, Ann Edra Harvey and her husband Sid of Wichita, Kansas, four grandchildren, Kelli Johnson, Adam Harvey, Alex Harvey, Alyssa Harvey along with other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 1, 2009 with the family present in the evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m..
Funeral services for Marjorie will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 2, 2009 in the Argonia Friends Church.
Interment will follow in Argonia Cemetery, Argonia, Kansas.
