On a night when Patrick and Christa Curl were crowned homecoming king and queen. South Haven won two big games against Central Burden Friday.
The girls game was ugly, ugly, ugly with South Haven winning 57-11. The score was 22-0 at the end of the first quarter, 37-5 at the half. Even with the freshmen playing, the Cardinals dominated the second half.
The boys game was much more competitive with South Haven beating Central 50-40.
South Haven fell behind early, 10-6 in the first quarter and midway through the second quarter was down 15-6.
The Cardinals fought back and pulled within three, by the half 25-22.
Then at the 5 minute mark of the third quarter, South Haven took the lead for the first time in the game, and never looked back.
The Cards led 31-29 after three periods.
Then in the fourth would rattle off a 10-2 run to take a 41-31 lead. Central could only pull with eight thereafter.
"Once we switched to a zone that really helped us out," said Darren McDorman, South Haven head boys basketball coach. "(Layne) Smith was just killing us inside in that first half. We did a good job adjusting our rotation in the second half and containing him."
Smith definitely had two different halves. In the first half he scored 16 points and 0 in the second.
The win improved South Haven's record to 5-1 in the South-Central Border League and 10-4 overall. The Lady Cards are 5-1 in league and 11-3 overall.
