The following is a synopsis of the rule changes by the Kansas State High School Activities Association as stated on its website:
1. The time period during which school coaches may conduct their camps for their athletes has changed in all sports, not just football, volleyball and basketball. All school coaches conducting summer camps must now complete their camps by Saturday, July 18.
2. Volleyball, football and basketball coaches now have an eight-week period at the beginning of summer to coach their athletes. Beginning with Saturday before Memorial Day and concluding July 18, coaches may coach without restrictions.
3. Beginning Sunday, July 19, and ending Saturday, Aug. 1, volleyball, basketball and football coaches are limited to only providing instruction in small groups: three players in basketball, four players in volleyball, five in eight-man football and six in 11-man football on a voluntary basis. Coaches may not require athletes to participate.
4. Beginning Sunday, Aug. 2 through Sunday, Aug. 16 volleyball, football and basketball coaches may only participate with their athletes in weight lifting and non-sports specific conditioning. During this two-week period no other coaching or instruction is permitted by these coaches.
5. The first day of fall sports practices begin on Aug. 17.
6. All parties are reminded, contact between coaches and athletes in all sports during the summer month is optional. It may not be required for membership on a school team, placement on JV vs. varsity, nor may it be required as criteria toward earning an athletic letter. Sanctions such as extra conditioning may not be imposed on students for failing to participate in summer activities.
