Wellington places first in home meet; rises to No. 1 in rankings.

    The Wellington girls tennis team won an extremely tough five-team tournament, competed well in a tournament of champions, and moved up to No. 1 in the Class 4A rankings of the Kansas Tennis Coaches Association.
    And the No. 1 doubles team - Kaitlyn Buck and Lexis Hibbs - is still out of the lineup.
    Tuesday afternoon, Wellington hosted one of its two home tournaments against Andover Central, Goddard, Buhler and Conway Springs.
    Wellington won the tournament with 28 points. Andover Central placed second with 27 and Conway Springs had 26. Buhler scored 12 and Goddard 7.
    Conway Springs and Andover Central are ranked in Class 3A and 5A respectively.
    "I'm proud of the girls, especially our No. 2's today for stepping up for the team," said Brian Aufdengarten, Wellington head girls tennis coach. "Dani (Anderson) and Kailey (Jenkins) had another good day, also losing only one match."
    Jenkins/Anderson placed second in No. 1 doubles behind Johanna Ramirez and Amy Fugit of Andover Central, 8-5.
    In No. 2 doubles, Kelsey Whaley and Alex Kimball finished first. 
    In No. 1 singles, Erianne Adams placed fourth in a very tough field. Sara Peck placed first in No. 2 singles.
    Wellington's junior varsity will be at Conway Springs this weekend.
    The individual Wellington results are as follows:
    No. 1 singles - Adams def. Hannah Johnson of Goddard, 7-3; lost to Bridget Winter of Buhler, 7-6(7-5); lost to Ashley Koester of C. Springs 7-1; and lost to Andover Central's Megan Wong 7-2.
    No. 2 singles - Peck def. Sarina Venegas of Goddard 7-5; def. Ayesha Naveed of Buhler 7-0, def Claire Devlin of C. Springs 7-1; and def. Alli Hatchett of Andover Central 7-1.
    No. 1 doubles - Jenkins/Anderson def. Carr/Hudnall of Goddard 7-4; def. Wiens/Dukart of C. Springs 7-2; def. Koester/Ebenkamp of C. Springs 7-3; lost to Ramirez/Fugit 7-5.
    No. 2 doubles - Whaley/Kimball def. Stemple/Shobe of Goddard 7-4; def. Walton/Walton of Buhler 7-2; def. Holland/Gerber of C. Springs 7-3; def. Jones/Murray of And. Central 7-1.

    Wellington was ranked No. 1 in the latest KCA rankings. In the preseason poll, Topeka Hayden was No. 1, but fell to fourth this week.

    Others: Parsons, Smoky Valley, St. James Academy.
    Conway Springs is ranked No. 4 in Class 3-2-1A.

    Wellington finished 12th in the 16 team Wichita Collegiate Tournament of Champions held Saturday.
    The Crusaders, along with Wichita Collegiate and Wichita Trinity, were the only schools Class 4A and below in the field. All the rest were Class 6 and 5A.
    Jenkins/Anderson had the best day going 3-2 for the day.
