Wellington radio station KWME will be filling the air ways with the sound of cracking baseball bats as they partner up with the Wichita Wingnuts for the 2010 season.
Based out of Wellington, KS, 93.5 KWME features "Oldies" music from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. The Wingnuts' new radio home is a division of Johnson Enterprises which also owns ESPN affiliates based in Wellington and Winfield. Their FM signal extends into Sedgwick, Sumner, Cowley, and Harper counties, as well as portions of Northern, Okla.
“They came to us and said ‘We want to be on’ and we got a deal worked out with them,” said Operations Manager Travis Turner.
"We are extremely excited about our new partnership with Johnson Enterprises,” said Wingnuts' General Manager Josh Robertson in a written statement. "This is a great opportunity for us to reach out to a larger fan base by improving our coverage area and increasing exposure for our business partners."
The radio station is no stranger to carrying sports broadcasts. Along with the new deal with the Wingnuts, the station also airs baseball, basketball and football games from Wellington, Derby football, Caldwell basketball, along with KU and K-State games, as well as the Kansas City Royals.
“We’re fairly busy,” he said.
This isn’t the first time KWME has carried games from Lawrence Dumont Stadium.
“We had the Wranglers at one point. When they couldn’t find anyone in Wichita to do it, they came to us,” said Turner, who stated the station didn’t seek out the Wingnuts.
“They are simply buying air time from us,” he said. “It’s their show, essentially,”
All 96 Wingnuts' regular season and potential post-season games, will be broadcast on KWME. KWME will also carry the 2010 American Association All-Star Game on July 27th and at least one game each day during the 76th annual National Baseball Congress (NBC) World Series in August. All games will also be available over the internet.
Play-by-play will be done by returning broadcasters Terry Elliot and Steve Schuster for both the Wingnuts and the NBC World Series.
Terry Elliot and Steve Schuster return for another season of play-by-play for the NBC World Series and the Wingnuts respectively.
Listeners can expect some changes when the season starts to heat up.
“Although certain games will be on KWME, the Royals will move to our two AMs, KLEY and KKLE to make room for the Wingnuts,” said Turner.
