This weekend the third annual McComb Brothers Golf Tournament is about to begin.
The McComb brothers — consisting of Phil, Mitch and John — are busy raising money to erect four signs in Wellington on the outskirts of town on U.S. 81 and 160. The signs — to be located on the north, south, east and west sides of town— will list the various state championships won by Wellington High School since its inception in 1920.
"I've been to a lot of sports gymnasiums over the years, and there are very few schools, and I mean very few, that can spout 28 team titles and 81 individual titles," Phil said from his home in Chanute. "I think that is something people need to know about. We need to preserve our history."
So the annual golf tournament — to start this Saturday at 8 a.m. at the Wellington Golf Club — was formed to raise money to erect signs. Phil anticipates enough money will be raised to erect the first sign this autumn.
If no one has heard of this golf tournament, then let's just say, it's not for the golf enthusiast wanting to brush up on his/her golf game.
The tournament features a three-man scramble which includes such things as putting a tennis ball, kicking off a football from a tee, putting with a baseball bat, shooting a hoop, and answering trivia questions about WHS.
"We're inviting anybody who has had anything to do with Wellington High School in any capacity," Phil said. "It's going to be a good time."
Last year the tournament raised over $2,000.
Phil also wanted to emphasize something else.
"There's this misconception that this tournament is for the people who grew up with us McCombs," Phil said. "That can't be further from the truth. I can't think of five guys from the Class of 1980 (Phil's graduating class) who are still living in Wellington.
"This tournament is for anybody of all ages and gender."
