The Caldwell boys fell to Udall 38-35 in the regional championship game in another barn burner for the Bluejays.
Udall opened with a 6-2 run, scoring on its first three possessions. But scoring became more of a premium the rest of the evening.
The Eagles owned a 14-12 lead at the end of the first quarter and expanded the lead to 24-16.
Like the previous game against South Haven, Caldwell saw its opponent take a 10-point second-half lead before surmounting a comeback. Down 30-23 at the end of the third quarter and 33-24 early in the fourth, Caldwell would get an even mixture of free throws and layups to pull within four on a Dillan Kuehny layup with 1:59 to play.
Then on the next possession, a Mason Teeter steal resulted in a Dalton Whaley 3-pointer and Caldwell was down by one, 33-32.
Then on Caldwell's next possession, Kuehny hit a trey from the side and Caldwell, like the Thursday before, looked as if it would not be denied victory, leading 35-34.
But Udall came back down and scored on a Dylan Messer 12-footer. Caldwell then set up for the last shot, but Udall's Dylan Smith stole a Caldwell pass and then was fouled.
His two free throws sealed the deal.
"Our defense has been keeping us in games all season," said Jake Turner, Caldwell head boys basketball coach. "It's our offense that needed to step up tonight and it didn't happen until it was almost too late. Then we couldn't finish."
Udall's Skylar Kistler scored 15 points, while Devan Rueger had 10. Caldwell was led by Kuehny with 15.
