Coaches like to change jobs as often as underwear, so there is no surprise that there will be some new head high school coaches in Sumner County.
But what is surprising is Wellington High School has none - head or assistants.
"So far, I haven't heard of any," said Wellington High School Principal Dale Liston. "It's been very quiet. All we have been looking for is a vocal instructor."
Of course the summer is still young, so that could change any moment, he said.
As far as the rest of the county, there will be three new head football coaches in the county.
The biggie, as in the one capturing the most statewide attention, is at Conway Springs, where Lelin George stepped down as head coach after guiding the Cardinals to the 2008 Class 3A State Championship.
George will be replaced by long-time Conway Springs assistant Matt Biehler.
George is pursuing his Masters Degree and will be increasing his administrative duties.
Interestingly, Conway Springs has hired its last three head coaches after the Cardinals won a state championship. Mark Bliss was replaced by Greg Rosenhagen in 2003 who was replaced by George in 2004. Conway Springs has won six state championships since 1998.
Biehler knows the territory. He's been in the Conway Springs system for 11 years working as defensive coordinator since 2005.
"I've always prided myself as being ready to step in as a head coach when the time is right," Biehler said. "I had a couple of opportunities to be head coach at other schools, but it never felt right. This job feels right."
Biehler was a top 11 All-State high school player while playing linebacker at Herrington High School in 1992. He would later play football for Hutchinson Community College and Southwestern College. After one year as an assistant under Monty Lewis at Southwestern, he took a teaching job at Conway Springs and became an assistant.
    He's been there ever since.
"At Conway Springs, it's not about one coach, it's about a group of great coaches and kids with work ethic that is second to none," Biehler said. "We have 67 kids out for football next year and every single one of them know what is expected of them."        Conway Springs has added two new assistants on the staff: Ryan King and Wes May, both former Conway Springs players.
    In other coaching news:
•Belle Plaine has hired a new football coach. Brian Seba replaces D.J. Basgall, who has moved on to teach in Eudora. Seba was the middle school football in 2008.
It may be a daunting task for Seba for awhile. Belle Plaine went winless in 2008 and lost to Bluestem in the fourth game, breaking that school's 69-game losing streak.
Belle Plaine also hired a new volleyball coach. Karen Wiseman is replacing Rox Ann Seagrest.
•Argonia has hired a new high school football coach as well. Luke Greenwood, a 2003 Argonia High School graduate, has been hired to take over the reigns previously vacated by Clay McDaniels, who is going to teach math at Attica High School.
The Red Raiders will also have a new head boys basketball coach. Keaton Krell is replacing Bob Futo, who coached Argonia for one season as a Rule 10 coach.
•Also at Conway Springs, head volleyball coach Tonya Lange has resigned and moved to Hesston. Jennifer Kunz, an assistant, will replace her.
•Oxford is having change over in basketball. Shawn Burkes, a long-time girls basketball coach, will move to an assistant coach for the boys team under Kyle Green. Romney Runyun, once the head baseball coach at Oxford, returns and will be the girls basketball coach.
•Caldwell and South Haven currently have no coaching changes.    •And Caldwell High School graduate and former Wichita State University volleyball player Sara Lungren will become the head coach at Cheney High School.
