The Wellington boys basketball team was just three points away from finishing third at the Kingman Eagle Classic on Saturday night. They lost to Mulvane 61-59 in overtime.
"We played pretty well throughout the game, and got a little bit of a lead," said Head Coach, Brian Buchanan. "Then we just couldn't overcome the deficit in overtime." Wellington was up at halftime 31-25 after outscoring Mulvane 18-8 in the second quarter.
The game played out much more different than when these two teams played each other in game one at Wellington on Dec. 2. An early season rematch causes a lot of familiarity between the Crusaders and Wildcats.
"We just knew the things we had to do better going into the game," the coach said. "It was important for us to play well and having an opportunity of showing what kind of team we really are..." Levi Gurley, senior, lead the team in scoring again going for 19 points, giving him a tournament total of 61.
"Levi has done a great job," Buchanan said. "We're expecting him to play about 32 minutes a night and...I'm really proud of the way he played having two 20-point games (20, and 22), and a 19 point game. That speaks highly to what kind of a tournament he really had." The Crusaders travel to Andale Tuesday night, and to Maize South on Friday. Buchanan said they have to find a way to get back to .500 on the season over the course of this week.
