Over the course of last week, through the weekend, the Wellington High School Lady Crusader basketball team marched their way to a tournament championship, toppling the number four ranked team in the State to take home the hardware.
The Lady Crusaders started off the Kingman High School Eagle Classic facing the host team, Kingman. Behind 18 points from Dani Anderson, senior, and 14 points from Erianne Adams, senior, WHS captured a 17 point win, 47-30 on Dec. 6.
"We didn't play great, there's some things we need to work on," said Head Coach, Kevin Hackerott. "But we played good enough to win, the girls played really hard...just over all a good win." Game two for Wellington was Thursday, Dec. 8 against Medicine Lodge.
The Lady Crusaders had a solid 19-11 lead at halftime against the Indians. Then in the third quarter, WHS stepped on the gas with a 22-6 performance in route to a 50-21 final score. Kailey Jenkins, junior, lead the team with 12 points.
"Kailey shot the ball really well, and had four three's," Hackerott said. "...We had a lot of open looks the whole game from the outside." He added that at times his team "kind of muddled through," but played well enough to get a key victory.
"Our starters didn't play that whole last quarter," the coach said. "And we got some kids some good experience and that gave us a chance to for the Championship game." The Championship Game took place Saturday evening, Dec. 10, against Haven High School.
"Haven was number four in State, and we were number 8 so we knew it was going to be a battle," Hackerott recalled. "It was a great opportunity for us, Haven is very well coached and a very tough team." The game was very physical and Wellington got into some foul trouble in the early goings. Anderson sat most of the first half after getting two quick fouls.
Wellington was down 17 - 15 at the half, but the Coach was happy with how the girls rallied through the entire game.
"Shanlyn Hefley hit a big three off the bench, Ashlyn Whaley kept us in the game in the first quarter," Hackerott said. "We had people step up, and we played really well in the second half." The Lady Crusaders entered the third quarter with a 31-28 lead, which would propel Wellington to a 10-point 42-32 win. Anderson lead the team in scoring with 14-points.

"That was a big win," Hackerott said. "Any time you get a chance to win a championship, we like to do that." Wellington will travel to Andale tomorrow, and will travel to Maize South on Friday. The girls team is off to a fast start, having won their first four games in a row.
"These first four games, even though they're non-conference, kind of sets the tone for where you're going to be," Hackerott added. "We'd love to hang a banner, and to get that done, we've got to find a way to win conference games on the road."
