High scores on recent state standardized tests have put Oxford’s public schools in the spotlight.

Oxford Elementary joined Wellington Christian Academy in being Sumner County schools given the Governor’s Achievement Award.

To receive the award, a school must have achieved the Standard of Excellence in both reading and mathematics for the 2011 school year. Additionally, the school must have made adequate yearly progress in both reading and mathematics. Finally, the school must have scored in the top 5% in both reading and mathematics on the 2011 state assessments for each individual grade level.

Earning the Governor’s Achievement Award is no small feat. Of the 860 elementary schools in the state, only 43 of them were given the award.

Not to be outdone, the Kansas Public Education Task Force recently honored Oxford’s Senior/Junior High School with the Challenge Award for Academic Excellence. The Challenge Awards are given to Kansas schools that are encouraging student achievement despite having smaller student populations.

Terry Wiseman, Principal of Oxford Elementary (OE), said there would be a special presentation on February 16, during the school’s spring music program, recognizing the teachers and students of OE and what they have accomplished.

“Our staff works so hard to help the kids achieve. They understand the importance of it. The kids understand the importance of it. They all just work so hard,” said Wiseman.
