It was a battle early on at Andale during the girls game. The Wellington Lady Crusaders were on the road defending their 4-0 start to the season, but they would head home 4-1. Andale beat Wellington 30-28, Tuesday night.
"You can't go three for 12 at the free throw line, and miss the number of lay-ups that we missed," said Head Coach, Kevin Hackerott. "We had a couple of looks at the end, it just didn't go in."
Offense came at a premium for both teams. Each was getting looks and shots on the basket but most weren't going in. The Lady Crusaders shot 4/11 in the first half, with some added trouble at the foul line, they went into the locker room down 10 - 8 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Erianne Adams, senior, scored four of her six points to keep Wellington in the game. The Lady Crusaders would push ahead late in the third period, shooting 5/5, leading to a thrilling finish.
"Erianne is always our energizer," the coach said. "She plays so hard, and has so much energy, she did a great job in the third quarter."
Andale recaptured the lead, then Wellington went cold again, shooting 3/8, but they managed to keep it close, and tied up through most of the quarter.
With under a minute left, Andale hit a key basket, forcing Wellington to go to the drawing board.
"We tried for an iso, with Dani [Anderson] on the block, and they did a good job with that," Hackerott explained. "So we ran our offense and got Ashlyn [Whaley] on a curl..."
Whaley drove down the lane only to have her shot blocked. Andale took over possession and was able to run out the clock.
"The kid came up, made a great block," Hackerott said. "You've got to give them credit..." Anderson ended up as the leading scorer for the game with 12 points.
The Wellington teams will be on the road again, at Maize South on Friday, Dec. 16. This will be the last game before the holiday break.
