Kids Across Sumner County Celebrate Home

The Sumner County Economic Development Commission (SCEDC) recently brought creativity and county-wide connection to classrooms with a “Love, Kansas” coloring and letter-writing contest. The initiative invited Sumner County students in grades K–12 to color a Kansas-themed design and reflect on what they love most about living here.

In addition to their colorful creations, students were asked to write a letter encouraging someone to move to Sumner County — offering a child’s-eye view of what makes small-town life so special.

“Dear Movers,” one young student wrote, “Are you tired of living in the big city? Well, I got good news for you! Wellington is a pretty cool small town! There are farms.”

SCEDC staff partnered with each school district in Sumner County to distribute the coloring pages and gather submissions. The response was enthusiastic, with hundreds of entries pouring in from across the area — each one a vibrant and personal expression of local pride.

One winner per grade level was selected based on both the creativity of their artwork and the heart in their letters. Each winning student received a custom “Love, Kansas” t-shirt and ten stickers featuring their personalized design — a tangible way to share their love for Kansas with friends and family.

The contest was more than just an art project; it served as a meaningful way for students to reflect on their roots and celebrate the unique charm of rural living. From favorite local landmarks to beloved traditions and tight-knit community ties, the students’ letters offered a powerful reminder of what makes Sumner County feel like home.
