In December 2024, the Wellington community was officially designated a Purple Heart City, an honor bestowed by the Military Order of the Purple Heart. This designation serves as a public declaration of respect and appreciation for those who have earned the Purple Heart and signifies Wellington’s commitment to supporting local veterans and their families.
The Purple Heart is the oldest military decoration still in use. Originally established by George Washington in 1782, it was the first American service award made available to the common soldier. Today, it is awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces who have been wounded or killed in combat against a declared enemy of the U.S.
Wellington joins 16 other Purple Heart Cities in Kansas and more than 900 locations across the country in honoring the nation’s 1.6 million Purple Heart recipients.
Over the next several weeks, The Wellington Daily News will feature a series of stories highlighting local Purple Heart recipients — sharing their experiences, sacrifices, and service.
As part of the community’s continued recognition of this distinction, Dan C. Matson VFW Post #881 will host a Poker Run on Saturday, August 9. The event serves as a public expression of gratitude for those wounded or lost in action, and all proceeds will support programs and services for local veterans.
Advanced registration is not required and the community is invited to participate. Ride your motorcycle or drive a car, the VFW will begin selling cards at 9am the day of the event. The first card is $25 and additional cards are $10 each. Breakfast will be available that morning and the first bikes will depart at 10:30am.
