Conway Springs beat Wellington 16-3 in the finals at the Babe Ruth State Softball Tournament over the weekend in Newton.

The Wellington U14 softball team had a good run through the tournament, but went cold in the finals and finished second at the Babe Ruth State Softball tournament held in Newton over the weekend.

The Wellington team lost to Conway Springs 16-3 in the finals. Several hits, a couple errors and a hit batters allowed Conway Springs to score six in the first inning, putting Wellington into an immediate hole.

Wellington managed two runs in the fourth and seemed ready for a rally, but could get no closer than 9-3. Conway Springs scored seven in the bottom of the fourth and the game ended after the top of the fifth.

Coach Patrick Fink said his team had a good run, and had been playing well until the team got to the finals.

"We picked a bad time to have a bad game. This game wasn't representative of how we really played," he said.

The team qualifies for the regionals in Missouri in a couple of weeks. Coaches said they were not sure if the team would mae the trip. Fink said he woudl talk with parents and find out what they wanted to do.

In the semifinals Wellington beat Erie 5-2 and Conway Springs beat Tri Valley 12-11. Erie beat Tri Valley 7-4 in the third place game. The top four teams qualify for the regionals.

The team went through pool play Friday with a 3-0 record with convincing wins. Wellington beat Newton 14-4 and Andover 14-2, and Tri Valley 6-5.
