e Wellington boy's basketball team took part in the Chaparral Roadrunner Classic tournament last week. After an opening round victory against Circle and a 47-44 thrilling victory over the Wichita Warriors in the semi-nals, the Dukes took on Chaparral for the tournament Championship Saturday afternoon.
e Wellington Middle School gym was abuzz with curiosity and creativity during the recent Science Fair and Open House, which drew nearly 200 guests eager to encourage and support young scientists. e fair featured around 100 projects created by 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students, spanning 16 categories. A panel of 12 volunteer judges evaluated the entries, with the top projects earning the opportunity to compete at the Regional Science Fair at Exploration Place on February 21st.
e Wellington Youth Wrestling Club hosted its 2nd annual Crusade rough e Heartland tournament at Wellington High School last Sunday, January 25th. e event brought together 29 regional wrestling teams and 315 youth wrestlers for a day of spirited competition.
Recently, students and faculty at Wellington High School heard the powerful story of Coach Mark Potter and his wife, Nanette. As a head basketball coach for over 30 years, Potter's greatest victory wasn't on the court-it was overcoming severe depression.
David Leroy Hunt, 80, of Frontenac, Kansas, passed away on January 20, 2025, Mercy Hospital- Pittsburg. David was born on July 13, 1944, in Edison, Nebraska, to Doris David Hunt and Leslie Hunt. He grew up in Lincoln, Kansas, and graduated from local schools before attendi ng Emporia State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in education. He later earned a master’s degree from Pittsburg State University.
Yesterday marked Kansas' 164th birthday, commemorating the state's admission to the Union on January 29, 1861.
