I know you’re no dummy and got this one right away! This vintage male mannequin is easily distinguishable and well known, but how long have these mannequins been around? How long ago would you guess? A hundred years, a couple hundred years? Alas, the mannequin’s history runs as deep as the 15th century! The early dummy was not the lifesize thing we think of, but was in miniature form similar to a fashion doll like a Barbie. These salesman size sample dolls would display Not until the 18th century did our inanimate, human- form friends become life size; this iteration was made from wicker.

Pet of the Week

Sundae is a beautiful, 1½ year old that came into the shelter with her kittens. She was a wonderful mom and her babies are currently being adopted out. It’s her turn! Sundae is easy-going, enjoys lounging, pets, cuddles, and playtime. Be sure to “scoop up” this adorable girl before she’s gone! Stop in this week to meet Sundae. We are open Wednesday through Friday 3-7pm and Saturday 10am-2pm. If you are interested in adoption, please complete the online application before you come in to speed up the adoption process. When You Break A Heart

Last Sunday, on the first anniversary of the police raid on the Marion County Record newspaper, the chairs in the Marion Senior Center were filled with individuals who gathered to honor the memory of Kansas newspaper publisher Joan Meyer. The free program featured a panel discussion about the aftermath and implications of the event that resonated in newsrooms worldwide.

Youth Join Polling Efforts

Voters in Sumner County headed to the polls last week to participate in the local Primary Election. Upon arrival, they were greeted by election poll workers who checked their identification, escorted them to a voting booth, and supervised the secure deposit of their ballots.

Upstairs Downtown Venue Opens

The Caldwell Chamber of Commerce recently hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of The Upstairs Downtown Venue. Located at 7 West Avenue A Street in downtown Caldwell, the newly restored upstairs of this 1910 brick building features a spacious ballroom and hotel-style lodging.

I’m sure you didn’t have to take a shot in the dark to know last week’s item was a long gun, but did you know what kind? It’s a Remington Model 10A 12 Gauge shotgun. Designed in 1908, this was the first, pump-action, bottom-ejecting shotgun introduced to the American market.

Ginter Participates In KSHSAA Coaching School

Last week, the Salina Fieldhouse hosted the 90th Annual KSHSAA Coaching School where over 500 coaches from around the state gathered to discuss all aspects of coaching high school athletics. The new location allowed coaches to demonstrate their topics as the facility has multiple turf fields, three full size basketball courts with volleyball capabilities as well as hitting cages for baseball, softball and golf.
