This year, Head Start turns 60 years old—a big milestone for a program that has changed the lives of over 40 million children and families across the country since it began in 1965. Right here in Sumner County, Futures Unlimited has proudly served as the local Head Start provider for more than three decades.
Wellington’s Memorial Auditorium will be the place to be on Saturday, May 31, as the Wichita-based party rock band Big Fat Fun takes the stage for an evening of high-energy entertainment and classic rock favorites.

More than 100 guests attended the Sumner County Historical & Genealogical Society’s recent presentation, “The Orphan Trains of Sumner County,” led by local historian Jim Bales. For some in attendance, the event revealed a surprising personal connection to an orphan who once settled in Sumner County.
Over the past couple of months, I participated in the Wellington Recreation Commission’s (WRC’s) Community Challenge as a member of the Cowley County Community College – Sumner Campus team. The Challenge included a number of athletic and non-athletic events such as a “name-that-tune” game, trivia, and completing a 500-piece puzzle.
