WDN Brings Home 13 KPA Awards

The Wellington Daily News brought home top honors at the Kansas Press Association’s 2025 Awards of Excellence, held last Thursday during the annual KPA Convention in Salina. Competing against hundreds of newspapers across the state, the WDN staff earned an impressive 13 awards—including seven first-place finishes—in recognition of outstanding journalism, design, and storytelling.

Brungardt Named New WHS Principal

When classes resume this fall, Wellington High School will open under the leadership of a new principal: Bob Brungardt. Brungardt most recently served as the assistant principal and activities director for USD 431 Hoisington in Barton County, a community about 10 miles north of Great Bend.

Less is More

When students are involved in education-based activities, they are better! We all know the connection with peers, with coaches and sponsors, and to the community supports their academic success as well as their physical health and mental wellness. However, can some students take it too far and be doing too much? Earlier in April, I listened intently to the doctors, athletic trainers, school nurses and school leaders serving on the KSHSAA Sports Medicine Academy as they talked about a significant concern becoming more prevalent in their work with students.

Food Entrepreneurship Workshop Highlights Growth

Sumner County Economic Development, Network Kansas, K-State Research and Extension, and the Heartland Regional Food Business Center welcomed producers, farmers, and ranchers to the KanOkla Upstairs Downtown conference center in Caldwell for a day of informational sessions focused on food entrepreneurship, food incubators, commercial kitchens, financing options, and more. Part of K-State’s spring community visit series, the workshop explored what it takes to bring locally produced food to market.
