The Avenue of Flags takes place at Prairie Lawn Cemetery and is one of Wellington’s most iconic community events. About 300 volunteers are needed to transform the cemetery into one of the most memorable visual experiences our town presents.
If you were living in Wellington in November of 2008, you may recall the famous moving house. That fun fact, as well as the age of the home, attracted the attention of the popular Instagram page “Circa Old Houses” which features pictures of the most beautiful historic homes on the market.
Students from across the country gathered in Wellington last Friday to practice flying aircraft in Memorial Auditorium. They were preparing to compete in the “Flight” event category of the 39th Annual Science Olympiad National Tournament being hosted at Wichita State University the following day. The nearly 30 foot high ceilings in Memorial provided the ideal environment for the two-member teams to test their free flight rubber-powered aircraft. Free flight model airplanes are designed, built, and trimmed to fly without user intervention once they are launched.

There are some new programs being offered at the Library this summer. Some are tied in with the Summer Reading Program and others are just for fun! First, for children grades 2 - 5 there is “National Explorers”.
Family, friends, coworkers and community members have found themselves with a hole in their hearts since April 17th when they lost one of the city’s most notable and memorable city employees. Randy Redford will always be remembered for his love of nature, outgoing personality and ability to tackle any job.
The primary Agenda item for the City Council Work Session was a discussion regarding city employee retention. Wellington City Manager, Jeff Porter, presented the Council with a detailed analysis of the challenges the City faces recruiting and retaining staff.
As previously reported, Wellington resident Markkel Bradley remains at Meadowbrook Rehabilitation Hospital in Gardner, KS. On the positive side, he is making strides towards recovering from the damage caused by the COVID-19 virus that put him in a coma last August.
No patrons were present to speak at the beginning of the May 8th BOE meeting. Jeff Porter, Wellington City Manager was present to discuss the task force committee for updates made to the athletic facilities at Sellers Park.
