Recently, the Kansas Department of Commerce held the annual “To The Stars: Kansas Businesses Awards” banquet in Topeka. This program recognizes businesses across the state for the valuable contributions they make to the Kansas economy and to the well-being of their communities.
Although the U.S. War Department Bureau of Public Relations published a preliminary list of those lost or missing from World War II in 1946, that list is incomplete and in some instances inaccurate. The non-profit initiative, Stories Behind The Stars, hopes to identify, organize and collect the stories of the 421,000+ Americans who were killed during World War II.
On the Cowley College Sumner campus, we continue to host area high school freshmen for informative visits. November will be a blockbuster month as it begins with our own local Wellington high school freshmen coming to campus for Career Exploration Day. WHS instructor Rane Case has arranged for all 142 freshmen to attend.
Guests of all ages participated in the first Cowley College Ag Day at the Sumner Campus last week. Members of the Cowley Livestock Judging Team joined Buddy Curry, Director of Agriculture and Ag Instructor Andrew Tucker in hosting the event that included interactive displays, outdoor games and adorable farm animals.

For the 2nd year in a row, The Tarnished Tulip hosted the Junk in the Trunk Flea Market in downtown Mayfield. Owners of the shop, Larry and Kelly Ford organize the event twice a year and invite vendors to display their wares.

Cole Wiens, son of April and Jeremy Wiens, of Wellington had a big week. The senior defensive end for the South Sumner Outlaws was elected Homecoming King as his team ended their regular season with an 8-0 record. Cole has been accepted into an accelerated law program (LEAD) through Wichita State. Through this program, he will begin his first year of the University of Kansas School of Law during his senior year at Wichita State.
