There were a few hot topics mixed with the more traditional business at the June 13th USD 353 Board of Education meeting. Matters discussed included the Wellington Recreation Commission (WRC) Mill Levy, changes in Athletic Facilities, the School Employee Handbooks, the Kennedy Outbuilding, and E-Gaming.
Our Pet of the Week is Bourbon! He is a large mixed breed around 4 years old. Removed from death row at another shelter, this big boy loves cuddling, enjoys playing with his toys but does not tear them up! He is a gentleman and doesn’t jump on you, but he does show his affection with lots of kisses. Bourbon has been on several outings including a local nursing home and everyone adores him. This love bug would make a wonderful addition to any family.
The Memorial Auditorium Board currently has a vacancy and applications for the position will be accepted through June 30, 2022. The appointment is for the remainder of the term, which is through April 30, 2024. This appointed member must be a resident of the City of Wellington.
Do you know there’s a type of glass that glows? It may sound like something out of science fiction, but it’s real and has been around for centuries. To some it is known as “Uranium” glass and others call it “Vaseline” glass. This unusual glass emits an eerie green shine when placed under an ultraviolet (UV) or “black” light. It’s that special quality that has drawn some to become collectors. However, many don’t know the history of the glass and that the “glow” was an unexpected surprise.
Members of the City of Wellington Street Department staff, Jeff Ferguson and Ethan Creamer, endured the hot temperatures to help prepare the downtown streets for the upcoming Wheat Festival. Adding a fresh coat of paint to the pedestrian crosswalks increases their visibility and helps keep local and out-of-town visitors safe during this busy time.
Summer doesn’t mean we slow down here at the Cowley College Sumner campus! Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Newman students are here three days a week. Lions Club and Rotary continue with their weekly meetings.
