Storyteller, poet, and songwriter Jim Hooker recently made a memorable journey to Wellington, his first in-person visit to the town he had visited many times in his imagination. Hooker chose Wellington as the setting for his book “In Full Bloom” due to its rich football traditions and Midwestern charm, which created a backdrop that suited his fictitious storyline.

The annual Sumner County Fair Horse Show took place last Saturday in Caldwell, hosted for the fourth consecutive year by Melinda and Marcus Neal. The open show featured six timed events: Trail Ride, Pole Bending, Butterfly, Barrel Racing, Figure 8 Barrels, and the Flag Race.
Sumner County has 4-H clubs in Wellington, Conway Springs, Caldwell, Belle Plaine and South Haven. The final results from member’s entries in the Static exhibits, the Hand Pet, Rabbit, and Poultry Show and Livestock Show for the 4-H Fair have been awarded.
The 33rd running of The Great Race will be held on Saturday, July 27th, in South Woods Park, located at 1110 West 4th Street in Wellington. This year, 10 teams will compete for the coveted “Depot Cup” in this unique, one-of-a-kind race.
Hometown girl Annette Lawless added two new pieces of hardware to her collection last Saturday evening, July 20th, at the 2024 Heartland Emmy Awards in Oklahoma City. Lawless was honored in the competitive “Community Service” category for her outstanding work on the ongoing series “Missing In Kansas,” which raises awareness about missing persons from the state.

The city council meeting opened with the Call to Order and Pledge of Allegiance. Reverend Wes LeFlore of the Church of Christ led the invocation.
