Kansas Achieves Highest Economic Growth Rate in the Nation

New data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) reveals that Kansas experienced remarkable economic growth, reaching a rate of 9.7% in the 3rd quarter of 2023—the fastest among all states. This impressive performance builds on the state’s already strong record, as Kansas held the second-fastest economic growth rate in the 2nd quarter of 2023 at 7.4%.

WHS Falls At Collegiate

The Wellington boys basketball team competed hard but were over matched and overwhelmed by Wichita Collegiate last week in their first game back from Christmas break. The Spartans jumped out to a 6-2 lead as their full court press challenged the Crusaders.

The Dockum Drugstore Sit-In

The Sumner County Historical & Genealogical Society (SCHGS) will present “The Dockum Drugstore Sit-In,” a talk by Prisca Barnes on January 22nd at 6:30 pm in the Short General Education Center at Cowley College. This free and opento- the-public program delves into the historic 1958 sit-in organized by Wichita’s black students at Dockum Drugstore, a pivotal event in the quest for racial equality and an end to segregation. Facing discrimination in movie theaters and restaurants, the students peacefully protested at the popular lunch counter for three weeks.

WHS Girls Top Andale

The Wellington girls’ basketball team bested Andale even with an ugly second half to improve to an undefeated AVCTL league record at 5-0 in league play. The Lady Crusaders started the game doing what they do and jumped out to a 15-0 lead on the Lady Indians, forcing an Andale timeout.

WHS Students Prepare For SunPowered Student Challenge

Since the end of October, a group of five WHS students has been diligently meeting before class each day to prepare for the SunPowered Student Challenge, a unique competition in Kansas. Sponsored by Kansas Electric Cooperatives, comprising the 26 Rural Electric Cooperatives across Kansas, the SunPowered Student Challenge competition serves as the culminating project of a curriculum centered around solar energy.

Ask anyone that has a passion for collecting Depression Glass and you’ll find a wealth of stories, many of which reflect back to a cherished family member. As the National Depression Glass Association celebrated their volunteers last Saturday, several of them recalled getting started collecting with a piece or two from a family member, often their grandmother.

First Powerlifting Meet

The WHS Powerlifting team had their first meet of the season last Saturday. It was a virtual meet, so the Crusaders participated against 14 other schools from their own facility Top Overall finishers from the boys included: Maverick Peterson, 124 pounds, 1st in Bench, 1st in Squat, 2nd in Clean and 1st Overall.
