Fikes Named New Teacher of the Year

Making state headlines again, Lindy Fike, former Wellington Middle School Family and Consumer Sciences teacher recently received another award for excellence in teaching. Nominated by her peers, Fike was named “New Teacher of the Year”for 2022/2023 by the Kansas Association of Teachers of Family and Consumer Sciences.

Rock and Roll At The Fair

The 96th Sumner County Fair’s theme was Rock ‘N Roll, and the parade was all about the music, and tractors, lots of tractors! Mark and Kathy Schmidt, Sumner County Fair Board President, served as Grand Marshals. A1 Members of the Wellington community including local 4-H and FFA members exhibited their livestock, flowers, crafts, vegetables, artwork, photography and other divisions.

Revenue Neutral Notifications

In March 2021, the Kansas Legislature passed K.S.A. 79-2988, which requires Kansas County Clerks to send taxpayers notification of the Revenue Neutral Rate (RNR) compared to the proposed rate for each taxing subdivisions. Taxing subdivisions are prohibited from levying an ad valorem property tax that exceeds the RNR without first holding a public hearing and passing a resolution.

Sumner County 4-H Fair Results

The final results from the Static exhibits, the Hand Pet, Rabbit, and Poultry Show and Livestock Show for the Sumner County 4-H Fair are all in and ribbons awarded to the winners. Ribbons that were awarded included; Grand Champion, Reserve Champion, Purple (Superior), Blue (Excellent), Red (good), White (fair) and Cloverbud Green (awarded to entries from 5 - 6 year olds) As a reminder, the consultative judging was held on Tuesday, July 11th at the Raymond Frye Complex in Wellington.

Last weekend, Eileen Urbanek taught a 3-day foundation paper piecing retreat at The Hive. And, as she said with a twinkle in her eye, “It’s not your grandma’s quilt”! Our Hive classroom was filled with 15 quilters working on at least 10 different types of projects.
