The Kiwanis Club has officially passed its Flag Program to the Wellington Noon Lions Club. As in previous years, the service includes placing an American flag at your residence from sunrise to sundown on five national holidays: Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and Veterans Day.
The 98th annual Sumner County Fair, July 31-August 3, 2025 was filled with family events, a colorful parade, lots of exhibits to explore and livestock shows to see. The weather was mild which brought out the crowds to enjoy the music and small-town atmosphere.
At the recent Sumner County Advisory Committee meeting, Stacy Davis, Executive Director of Sumner County Economic Development, announced that Sumner County has been selected to participate in a new pilot initiative that brings the proven strategies of the Kansas Main Street program to the county-wide level. One of just three counties chosen for the pilot, Sumner County will have the opportunity to reinvest in its downtown districts, strengthen support for small businesses, and preserve the unique character of each community’s historic main street.

Wellington volleyball players got their first look at the new high school head coach, Kaylie Lagasse (Luh-gas) last week as they participated in the annual Wellington volleyball camp. “I’ve always thought Wellington had good athletes,” said Lagasse.
Wellington native and singer/songwriter Makayla Brownlee will take the stage at the Cowley County Fair on Saturday, August 2, as the opening act for legendary country music group The Oak Ridge Boys. For Brownlee, performing at fairs is nothing new—but this one feels a little different.
Local chef Mike Castaneda is headed back to the World Food Championships this fall! His dish—Mushroom Chile Filet with Tomato Confiture—earned a Silver Medal at the recent Taste of America Challenge. Described as “an incredible showcase of culinary creativity and flavor,” the award-winning entrée secured his spot in the national competition.
Carter Green, a Wellington native and owner of Greenjeans Studios, has been recording and producing music for over 25 years. His downtown studio—fittingly located above a hearing aid store—has been in continuous operation, where he has produced more than 7,000 songs for both local and national artists.
