MAY 16, - MAY 23, 2024 Salena “Shell” Dennis, 53, passed away on May 8, 2024. A memorial service will be held at 11am, Saturday, May 18, 2024 in the chapel of Cornejo Funeral Home in Wellington.
Wellington-born and bred, our beloved mother, Joan Schwinn, left this earth for her heavenly rest on April 23, 2024, in Woodstock, Illinois. She was 95 years old. The youngest child and only daughter of local attorney W.H. “Joe” and Cecile (Lomax) Schwinn, Joan grew up with her brothers Tom and Bill at 210 E. 7th Street, where their parents resided for almost a half-century. She graduated from Wellington High School in 1946. In 1949, she married Henry Virgil Kemp of Oxford, Kansas. Their union produced two children, and along the way, Joan made comfortable homes for her family in Wellington; Long Beach, California; and Jacksonville, Bloomington, and Carbondale, Illinois. She also lived for a time in Sedona, Arizona before returning to Wellington in the 1990s and early 2000s. From 2007 to 2022, she happily resided in the Walden Oaks Apartments in Woodstock, Illinois, before spending her final two years at the wonderful Valley Hi Rehabilitation and Nursing Home outside of Woodstock. John Laddie Somer, a beacon of knowledge and human connection, passed away peacefully of natural causes on April 23, 2024, at the age of 87 in his sleep, at home, in Chicago, Illinois. Born on October 16, 1936, in Wellington, Kansas.
Born in Evanston Wyoming June 9, 1970, Laurie Denise Headley passed away in Derby Kansas, on April 28, 2024. Laurie lived a life of service, always caring for others before herself. She was an amazing mother to her two boys, Kelly Dean Hess and Tyson Richard Ruebel, and her adopted son, Justin Wayne Steiner. She was a huge part of raising her son Kelly’s daughters, Shayanne Marie Hess and Savannah Lynn Hess. Laurie had the fortune of meeting her greatgranddaughter, Wrenlee Mae Frost, before her passing. Laurie is preceded in death by family and friends from across theglobe and survived by her children and grandchildren of Wellington Kansas. Laurie was well cared for by family and pampered until she became an angel. Her wishes were to be cremated. Services are on May 3, 2024, at First Baptist Church Mulvane Kansas, at 10:30 am.
Marvin Ray Kline, 81, passed away on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at his home in Milan, where he grew up. He was born on November 8, 1942, in Wellington, Kansas to Melvin and Maxine (Deffenbaugh) Kline.
Bobby Dean Harding (Bob) 88 passed away on April 5, 2024, at Topside Manor in Goodland, Kansas. He was born on August 4, 1935, to Theadore Harding and Ethel Young Harding Curry in their farmhouse.
Lindley Eugene Lawless, of Belle Plaine, Kansas, went to be with the Lord on Monday, April 8, 2024, at the age of 80. Lindley was the son of Emmett Lawless and Lorena Anthony Lawless, born November 27, 1943. He graduated eighth grade from Mount Zion, then graduated from Belle Plaine High School in 1961. He worked on the family farm before he enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1964. He was an expert marksman and gunner every year he served. While in the military, he met the love of his life, Minnie Jane Pruitt. They were married on October 1st, 1967. After being honorably discharged in 1969, he returned to the farm. He was passionate about farming and served as a member of the Soil Conservation Service. Lindley was a lifetime member of the Belle Plaine Church of Christ. He served as a deacon and as an elder. For 30 years he loved driving the Joy bus taking children to church and taking the youth group to social events. He always enjoyed visiting with family and friends. During his retirement years, Lin and Minnie traveled to Hawaii for their 30th wedding anniversary. They visited the Florida Keys and traveled on Route 66 and many other places throughout the US. He was preceded in death by his parents Emmett and Lorena Lawless; sisters Vona Jean Bates, Ethelyn Quiqley, and Theda May Wylie; brothers: Ernest Shipman, Johnie Lawless, and Gary Lawless. Survivors include wife Minnie Lawless, daughter Teresa Lawless Aurell, son David Lawless (Joi), son Mark Lawless (Karla), eight grandchildren; brothers LaVerne D Lawless, Donald E Lawless, and sister Shiley A Shetlar. Memorial services for Lindley will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 20, 2024, at the Belle Plaine Methodist Church. Graveside will follow at the old Belle Plaine Cemetery. Danny Ray Dry died unexpectedly on Monday, April 8th, 2024 at the age of 56. He was born in Wellington, KS on September 20th, 1967. Renowned in automotive circles for his body repair work, Danny worked in the automotive industry his entire life and would go on to spend most of his spare time restoring antique and classic cars. He is survived by his son, Zachary Hamilton Dry of Henderson, Nevada; daughter, Allison Marie Dawson of Wellington, Kansas; grandchildren, Evan Andrew Dawson, and Bryson Connor Bible; brothers, Brian Scott Dry and Justin Curtis Dry both of Wellington, Kansas. He is preceded in death by his father, Raymond Melton Dry, and mother, Diana Claudette Clift. A celebration of life event will be held in Wellington, KS at a date to be announced. The family wishes to thank Danny’s longtime friends; Bill & Johnea Reynolds, Ron & Tammy Frazee, and Johnny Palmer.
