Wellington High School senior Matteo Basso is nearly 5,500 miles away from home. New to the United States, Basso is part of a student exchange pro - gram that allows students from Europe and Asia to experience American cul - ture. ere's one part of US culture that isn't foreign to Basso - basketball.

WHS Powerlifters Look To Repeat

e Crusader powerlifters look to bring back-to-back State Championships home to Wellington. e girls won the Championship last year, while the boys nished as runners-up in the meet WHS hosted last season. e girls return Brit Zeka, Dru Zeka, Mikayla Ybarra and Brylee Johnson from last year's State Championship squad. Johnson competed in the 114 pound weight division and nished 2nd at State. Ybarra nished 1st in the bench press and 2nd in clean. Britt Zeka nished 1st in squat and 2nd in clean. Dru Zeka nished 1st in clean and 2nd overall. e boys return four competitors from last year's State team. Cayson Ramirez nished 1st overall at 198. Ramirez took 1st in squat and 2nd in bench. Lex Go got 3rd at State nishing 3rd in squat and clean. Couper Bu - chanan nished 2nd in squat and bench and 3rd overall. Maverick Peterson won the State Championship at 123 pounds. He nished 1st in all three events, squat clean and bench.
