The WHS Dynamic Dukes, formerly known as Special K Crusaders, showcased their basketball skills at Southeast High School last week. Established over fifteen years ago, the team provides special needs students with the opportunity to engage in basketball through the Tri-County League, featuring 13 teams from neighboring communities.
Recently, the KSHSAA Executive Board approved the 35-second shot clock on a trial basis for the upcoming 2024-25 basketball season. All KSHSAA member schools will have the option of employing the shot clock for all regular- season varsity home boys and girls basketball games.
The Crusaders competed in the Goddard Powerlifting Classic last Saturday. The boys team finished with 60 total points, placing second as a team. The girls won the meet with 59 team points. The Lady Dukes had multiple top three finishes. Taylor Earl finished in second place in squat, clean, bench and second overall in the 105 pound weight class. At 114 pounds, Brylee Johnson finished first overall and first in all three categories. Dru Zeka finished first in squat and clean and first overall at 123.
After defeating Olathe East by 25 in the quarter finals, and defeating backto- back 3A State Champion Goodland in the semi-finals, the Wellington Lady Crusaders had a date with Beloit in the Championship game of the Colby Orange and Black Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
After cruising past Belle Plaine, 70-32 in the first round and losing to Mulvane 62 -44 in the second round of the Road Runner Classic at Chaparral over the weekend, the Wellington boy’s basketball team edged past Conway Springs to earn third in the invitational on Saturday afternoon.
The Wellington girls wrestling team played host to a tournament last Saturday that featured teams from Derby, Arkansas City, Goddard, Buhler, Cheney, Clearwater, Kingman, Mulvane, McPherson, Circle and Wichita East.
The Wellington boys basketball team used their defense to get their biggest win of the season, holding Andale to just 26 points in the first three quarters last Friday night. Wellington opened up with a 10 - 6 lead.
The Wellington boys basketball team competed hard but were over matched and overwhelmed by Wichita Collegiate last week in their first game back from Christmas break. The Spartans jumped out to a 6-2 lead as their full court press challenged the Crusaders.
The Wellington wrestling team started off their post Christmas break stretch with a dual at Rose Hill. They lost 62-18.
The Wellington girls’ basketball team bested Andale even with an ugly second half to improve to an undefeated AVCTL league record at 5-0 in league play. The Lady Crusaders started the game doing what they do and jumped out to a 15-0 lead on the Lady Indians, forcing an Andale timeout.
