After a resounding 7018 win against El Dorado, the Wellington girls high school basketball team remains undefeated. The Lady Crusaders are ranked third in the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association girls Class 4A rankings according to the most recent report.
The Crusaders have played in the Cardinal Classic tournament for six years now. On Saturday night, the men’s basketball took home their first Cardinal Classic championship beating Hutchinson Trinity Catholic 55-43.
Prior to the tournament this past weekend, the boys and girls wrestling teams competed in a dual with Augusta in Wellington on December 8th. Boys freshman Cayson Ramirez won his 165 pound weight class.
The Lady Crusaders made it their goal at the beginning of the season to take home the trophy from every tournament they play in this year. They are off to a good start winning the Cardinal Classic.
The WHS women’s basketball team is a young team this season. The Lady Crusaders roster is made up of freshmen and sophomores and three seniors. However, head coach Eric Adams said that gives him hope for the rest of the season.
Head Coach Joe Newman said the game plan was to get the ball inside. The boy’s basketball team did just that by scoring 44 points in the paint in their 60-28 win against Mulvane last Friday night.
The girls and boys wrestling teams competed in a tournament at Caney Valley on December 3rd. Head Coach Mitch McComb said the wrestling teams have six more tournaments with different competitors before the postseason starts.

The Wellington High School football team had 11 players named to AVCTL IV All League First Team, Second Team, and Honorable Mention Team as a result of the 2022 season. Last season, only five players from Wellington received league honors.
When Head Coach Ross Foley of the boys and girls powerlifting team took over the program, there were only three student-athletes on the team. Now, the program has grown substantially to a formidable 84 athletes, including about 50 boys and 30 girls.
