Wichita State University conferred degrees to the following Wellington students in Summer of 2024. Lindsay I Hogan, Master of Education, Counseling Kileigh B Peninger, Bachelor of Arts in Education, ECU/Elementary Education Apprentice, Summa Cum Laude Melody A Rinehart, Bachelor of Arts, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Cum Laude Undergraduate students who attained a GPA of 3.9 out of a possible 4.0 received the Summa Cum Laude award; those with an average of 3.55 received the Magna Cum Laude award; and those with an average of 3.25 received the Cum Laude.
The Board of County Commissioners met in regular session in the Commission room of the Sumner County Courthouse. Those present were Chairman John Cooney and Commissioner Jim Newell.
The new owners of this Bombardier Challenger 300 flew to our airport to train and get fuel for the aircraft before returning to Georgia. The popular super-midsize jet was designed for business and personal travel with a 3,100-nautical-mile range and a cruise speed of up to 540.

The Sumner County Historical & Genealogical Society hosted Ken Spurgeon who presented “The Border Wars: Conflict in Kansas and Missouri During the Civil War”, at Cowley College. Members of the community filled the room to learn more about “Bleeding Kansas” as Spurgeon explained how two different ideologies fought to gain control of the state, the abolitionists who wanted to end slavery, and those who were pro-slavery and wanted to extend it further westward.
The Sumner County Historical & Genealogical Society in Wellington, Kansas will host “The Border Wars: Conflict in Kansas and Missouri During the Civil War”, a presentation by Ken Spurgeon on Monday, September 16th at 6:30pm in the Short General Education Center at Cowley College. The program is free and open to the public.
Construction is underway on the new Ag Greenhouse at Wellington High School, following the severe storm damage that destroyed the previous structure in August 2023. The storm led to the dismantling of the greenhouse, which disrupted classes and forced the cancellation of the popular annual plant sale.
