BARBARA LOUISE LAHAYE SWAGGART

Barbara Louise LaHaye Swaggart passed away on November 19, 2020 in Milton, Florida at the age of 91. Barbara was born in Wellington, Kansas on February 3, 1929 to Jessie Elder LaHaye and Walter LaHaye, owners of the White Way Cafe where Barbara worked as a girl. Barbara resided in Wellington most of her life and was a long time member of the Treble Clef Club, Wellington Orchestra (she was a life long flute player), special education teacher and later substitute teacher. She also was a long time secretary at the First United Methodist Church, Sunday School teacher, Girl Scout and Boy Scout troop leader and coach of numerous baseball teams. She also volunteered with the VITA tax service for many years both in Wellington and Weslaco, Texas. Bitten by the travel bug, she and husband of 63 years, FM (Fred) Swaggart III, retired in 1992 and traveled in a motorhome to every state in the lower 48 for over 20 years. They wintered and later lived full time in Weslaco, Texas in the Rio Grande Valley where she was a member of the Rio Grande Valley Orchestra and the VITA tax program. She and Fred traveled not only in the United States including Hawaii and Alaska, but also to Europe several times. Besides travel and the flute, Barbara was an inveterate card player, an excellent cook and seamstress, and a master of many crafts including knitting, crocheting, painting and drawing and wood working. She was a warm and loving wife, mother and friend. She is greatly missed. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter Joyce Swaggart Hansen, and her two sisters, Marjorie Gooch and Wanda Bruch. She is survived by her children Judy Shore, Janey Nida, Jerry Swaggart and Jackie Friend, 7 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Barbara has been cremated and her ashes were combined with her husband’s and scattered by her children at 10 of Fred’s and Barbara’s favorite fishing holes throughout the Midwest and was followed by a private memorial service.
