Butterflies Take Flight at WCA

Last Friday afternoon, Wellington Christian Academy was filled with excitement and wide-eyed wonder as teachers, students, and families gathered to mark the beginning of the 2025–2026 school year in a unique way. The celebration took flight—literally—as painted lady butterflies were released into the late-summer sky.

Hopefully this item didn’t leave you feeling fenced in! This board displays a collection of antique barbed wire pieces.For me, the Old West is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of barbed wire, but one of the early starts of this particular fencing technique was in France. In 1860, Leonce Eugene Grassin-Baledans developed fencing that consisted of thin, flat wire with bristling points ensuring pain for any crossers.

New Year, New Design

As the WHS Crusader football team gears up for their September 5th season opener against Collegiate, preparations are also underway on the Victory Bridge. For the first time, the bridge will be the path that carries the team from their new locker rooms to Sellers Park Stadium.

Rails Through Time

Until circa 1948, only Pullman passengers could travel coast-to-coast without changing cars at least once. Most travelers from the Northeast went through Chicago, and on most railroads that entailed a change of terminals, such as from Central Station or Union Station, to Dearborn Station where the Santa Fe trains departed.

Sunflower Power At The Fair

The 98th annual Sumner County Fair, July 31-August 3, 2025 was filled with family events, a colorful parade, lots of exhibits to explore and livestock shows to see. The weather was mild which brought out the crowds to enjoy the music and small-town atmosphere.

Wellington SRO Honored as Kansas D.A.R.E. Officer of the Year

In addition to assuring the safety of Wellington students, School Resource Officer Leslie Allen has spent more than her fair share of time in funky costumes, braved the dunk tank, and teamed up with costumed characters—all in the name of building trust with youth. Last week, Allen’s extraordinary efforts to connect with young people were recognized by the Kansas Juvenile Officers Association (KSJOA), which named her the 2025 Kansas D.A.R.E.
