I know you’re no dummy and got this one right away! This vintage male mannequin is easily distinguishable and well known, but how long have these mannequins been around? How long ago would you guess? A hundred years, a couple hundred years? Alas, the mannequin’s history runs as deep as the 15th century! The early dummy was not the lifesize thing we think of, but was in miniature form similar to a fashion doll like a Barbie. These salesman size sample dolls would display Not until the 18th century did our inanimate, human- form friends become life size; this iteration was made from wicker.

I’m sure you didn’t have to take a shot in the dark to know last week’s item was a long gun, but did you know what kind? It’s a Remington Model 10A 12 Gauge shotgun. Designed in 1908, this was the first, pump-action, bottom-ejecting shotgun introduced to the American market.

This looks just like a car tire right? But, the middle piece is glass for an ashtray. This vintage ashtray was made by the Firestone Tire Company This Firestone tire ashtray is a unique and nostalgic item from the mid-20th century reflecting both the automotive culture of the time and the innovative spirit of one of America’s oldest tire manufacturers. Aleena Rinehart

Aleena Rinehart is a sophomore at Wellington High School and in her first year as a lifeguard at the Wellington Family Aquatic Center. She decided to become a lifeguard because she wanted to have the opportunity to help out the community and make people feel safe. Her favorite part is “swim lessons with the little kids, they are always being silly and it makes me happy.” What has she learned from the experience? “It has taught me to be resilient with the long days outside in the heat. Also responsibility, making sure kids stay safe while also having fun.”

Malachi Holloway

Malachi Holloway is a sophomore at Wellington High School and in his first year as a lifeguard at the Wellington Family Aquatic Center. He decided to become a lifeguard because he wanted to “better himself”. His favorite part is working with his co-workers and interactions with those at the pool.

Sullivan Parkey, is a senior at Wellington High School and in her first year as a lifeguard at the Wellington Family Aquatic Center. She decided to become a lifeguard because her sister “bribed” her. Her favorite part is “watching people make fun memories”. What has she learned from the experience? “Working at the WFAC has taught me how to be more responsible.”

Many of my female readers probably use a similar item daily, or at least a couple times a week. Although this week’s item looks more like a ray-gun, its actual function is as a hair dryer! French stylist Alexandre Godefroy is credited with creating the first hair dryer in 1888.
