Janice Kay Donathan Moser, 87, of Wellington, Kansas, passed away on November 02, 2022 in Pensacola, Florida. Janice Kay Donathan Moser was born on May 29, 1935, in her beloved Poteau, Oklahoma, as the youngest of four children to Thomas Cecil Donathan and Johnie Ruby Donathan. Janice graduated from Poteau High School, Class of 1953, before attending the University of Oklahoma, where she earned a B.A. in Interior Design in 1958. Janice would go on to earn a B.A. in Elementary Education from Wichita State University in 1993. After graduating from college, Janice was employed as a graphic artist and interior designer in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she met her future husband, Carter Harris Moser. They were married on April 2, 1960, and remained married until Carter’s death in 2019. Janice often reminisced about her carefree childhood filled with her horses, dogs, books, and adventure at the foot of Cavanal Mountain. That adventure continued as the wife of a Naval Aviator, during which she and Carter raised three children, relocating from Florida to New Jersey, Virginia, and California.Throughout that time, Janice instilled in her children an appreciation for and exploration of the great outdoors, culture, and history. With an affinity for children and great respect for education, Janice volunteered as a room mother, Cub Scout leader, Girl Scout leader, and elementary school art teacher. Upon Carter’s retirement from the Navy in 1978, the family moved to his hometown of Wellington, Kansas. Janice rendered the architectural drawings from which they built their dream home, and she worked side-by-side with Carter building the house. Janice was also a talented artist, and the family home was decorated with her beautiful oil paintings. As her family grew up, Janice worked as a real estate agent and interior designer of Cessna Citation aircraft. Janice was a long-time and faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church of Wellington as a Sunday school teacher and alto in the church choir, which she thoroughly enjoyed. Over the years, she served as a deacon, elder, and church secretary. Throughout her life, Janice was a devoted animal lover. She was an active founding member of the Wellington Kansas Humane Society, participating in fundraising and adoptions for its no-kill shelter. Janice rescued and rehomed many strays but also adopted several, who became beloved family members. Janice’s children and grandchildren will remember her affectionately as being little and spunky with a wry sense of humor. Among their fondest memories are her laughter and family stories told around the dinner table. For over sixty years, she gathered everyone around the meals she prepared, and if they were lucky, dinner would be followed by the world’s best chocolate meringue pie. She made everyone feel at ease and brought fun into any conversation. Janice’s grandchildren loved her for her tremendous affection for dogs and for being devoted and respectful to all forms of natural life, including her backyard birds and squirrels that she fed no matter the weather. The grandchildren are all grateful for instilling in them her deep appreciation of art, music, books, and puzzle-solving. Above all, they will remember her for being a devoted mama and grandmother. Janice claimed she had the best life and lived during the best of times. Janice was preceded in death by her parents, siblings and her husband, Carter. She is survived by her three children (and their spouses); Susan (Brian) Bell of Pensacola, FL; David (Susan) Moser of Golden, CO; Cynthia (Eric) Hiebert of Lawrence, KS; seven grandchildren; Kyle Bell, Rachel Bell, Abigail Moser, Joseph Moser; Natalie Hiebert, Katherine Hiebert, and Mallory Hiebert Unruh (Jacob); and dog, Charlie of the home. Janice will be laid to rest next to her husband in a private family graveside service in Sumner Memorial Gardens in Wellington, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Wellington or the Wellington Humane Society of Wellington, Kansas.
