Shayland French signed to play basketball for the Cowley Tigers last Wednesday afternoon at the college gymnasium in Arkansas City. Cowley Tigers Basketball Coach Todd Clark also revealed that Wellington’s Avery Rusk will be headed to Cowley to play basketball this fall as well.
Clark, now in his fourteenth year, said both Rusk and French “can help us.  We are thrilled to have them be a part of the program.  He says Rusk will likely be more of a wing/guard, while French would be an inside forward.  According to the Cowley Tigers website, Todd Clark is the second winningest basketball coach in Lady Tiger history.  With Clark at the helm, Cowley has achieved 20 or more wins in a school record 11 straight years as the team finished 24-9 during the 2016-17 campaign. He helped the team qualify for the NJCAA Division I National Tournament for the first time since 1989 when the 2015-16 squad finished with a record of 27-8.
Shayland’s mother, Lucy Arabalo says that Shayland “has talked about it in the past about going there (to Cowley) and when this opportunity came up, she knew it was what she wanted. And of course I’m proud she’s worked hard to get here.”
Finally, Shayland says her decision to go to Cowley  was “the opportunity to play basketball, and get my pre meds out of the way, and the location is close to home.”  She goes on to say that “basketball is her favorite sport, with volleyball a close second.”
When asked if she was feeling sad or excited about graduating, she replied, “A little bit of both, excited that I’m continuing the next chapter in life, but sad because reality is starting to set in.”
