Recently, a complaint/concern was brought to the attention of Wellington Police regarding the riding of bicycles on public sidewalks in the downtown area…more specifically on Washington Street.
Wellington Police would like to remind citizens to include our biking community that riding bicycles, skateboards, skates, coasters or similar devices upon sidewalks in the downtown business district is prohibited by City Code…..
The following is taken from Wellington City Code:
Section 36-53/Bicycles and Motorcycles
Any person riding upon any bicycle, motorcycle, coaster, sled, roller skates or any toy vehicle shall not attach such person or such article to any moving vehicle upon any roadway
No person shall ride any bicycle or motorcycle on any sidewalk located in the central business district defined as Jefferson Avenue to C Street and 3rd Street to 9th Street.
No person shall park any bicycle or motorcycle on the sidewalks on Washington Avenue between Ninth Street and Fourth Street, except in the racks if available for such parking.
No person shall ride skateboards, skates, coasters or similar devices upon any sidewalk in the area bounded by and including sidewalks on the west side of Jefferson avenue, the south side of Third Street, the east side of C Street and the north side of Eleventh Street. Nothing herein contained shall be construed to prohibit the use of self-propelled wheel chairs or carts by persons who are handicapped or are convalescing.
Any person who shall violate any of the provision of this section shall, upon conviction thereof be fined not less than $1.00 and not exceeding $50.00.
