The Cowley College women's basketball team completed a sweep of the home and away series against Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa with an easy 72-34 win over the Lady Mavericks Wednesday at W.S. Scott Auditorium.
The victory improves Cowley's record to 6-1, while the Lady Mavericks are now 2-3.
On Wednesday, Cowley forced NOC into 16 first quarter turnovers and led 14-1 after the first 10 minutes of play. The Lady Mavericks had 23 turnovers and only three made baskets in the first half as Cowley built a commanding 31-12 halftime lead.
The Lady Tigers would go on to score the first 10 points of the third quarter and cruised to the 38-point win.
"We played sloppy, but it is good to be able to win despite playing ugly," Cowley head coach Todd Clark said. "We need to clean up some things quickly with conference play around the corner."
One area Cowley has excelled at is on the defensive end. The Lady Tigers forced NOC into 38 turnovers and have now held five of their seven opponents to 42 points or less.
"We need to hang our hat on our defense," Clark said.
Guards Kedranea Addison (14 points, seven rebounds, five steals) and Paige Granstaff (17 points, five steals) combined for 10 steals as Cowley scored 37 points off Lady Maverick turnovers.
Elina Oravakangas added 11 points, while both she and Veronica Martinez-Perez joined Addison with a team-high seven rebounds.
Frreshmen Sarsha Follacchio and Kadie Smith also played well and came off the bench to finish with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Chelsea Rhoades led NOC with eight points in the loss.
Cowley will now turn its attention to playing at Murray State College (1-3) Saturday at 2 p.m. in Tishomingo, OK.
"Murray State is a very tough place to play. We will need to be focused to play against a good opponent," Clark said.
