Before Thursday evening, the Wellington Lady Knights were just one win away from the Patriot League Championship.  Thursday evening in Rose Hill, the Wellington Eighth Grade Lady Knights were triumphant over Clearwater, winning 36-21.
The Lady Knights always had the lead over Clearwater, staking out a lead of 4-0 at the end of the first quarter.  With 4:34 remaining in the first half, the Lady Knights had a powerful lead of 10-0.  However, with three minutes remaining in the half, Clearwater finally got onto the board to make it 12-2.  Clearwater was showing signs of fighting back near the end of the half with a score of 12-6.
Coming back out onto the court after halftime, the Lady Knights began to pull away even more, scoring four more points to make it 16-6.  Nearing the end of the third quarter, Clearwater managed to make the score 23-14, but just could not get any closer to the Lady Knights.
It was clear in the final quarter that the Lady Knights were content to put a lot more points on the scoreboard.  With three minutes remaining in the game, they were leading Clearwater 31-14.  Excitement was definitely in the air for these girls as they knew they almost had this win finalized.  The Wellington crowd erupted as the buzzer finally rang out.  The final score of 36-21 put the Lady Knights as this year’s winner of the Patriot League West Division Championship.
Peyton Franke, Emma Stover, Ashlyn Gerten, Aserea Champion, Kamrynn Reichenberger, Jordyn Brown, Ashlee Peninger, Cecilia Lozano, Shianna Hughes, Maddie Nance, MaryAnn Buresh, Kasiah Richmond, Crystal Ramirez, and Laney Clift all worked hard this season, and deserve congratulations for a hard-fought and winning season.  They got there, of course, with the support of Head Coach Kelsey Whaley and Assistant Coach J’Lynn Ledesma.
Good job, Lady Knights.
