The Southwestern College baseball team dropped two of three games to the Sterling Warriors, falling in the series finale 6-4 on Tuesday evening.
A series that was moved to Winfield due to unplayable fields in Sterling, the Moundbuilders took the diamond as the road team in this three game set at their home park. After splitting the first two, the rubber match began with some early Moundbuilders offense as they tallied a quick score to begin the game on three first-inning hits. A lead off hit by Jalen Jones (SO/Shiloh, Ill.), followed by two stolen bases, allowed him to score on an infield single by Joseph Rankin (SR/Phoenix, Ariz.) to grab the early lead.
Following a Sterling run in the second, the Builders responded immediately with another one of their own as back-to-back doubles by Rankin and Jacob Gotchall (SR/Seabeck, Wash.) put them up 2-1. The pitching staff for each team settled in nicely following the second Builders score, with no offensive action really coming until the sixth inning when Sterling pushed across three to regain the lead and take a 4-2 advantage.
Just like earlier in the game, however, the Builders responded immediately to the Warriors' offensive push- this time with a two-run home run by Cody Carpenter (JR/Tucson, Ariz.) in the top half of the seventh inning. The shot to deep left-center with Carpenter came with two outs in the inning and helped round out a solid series for the center fielder. Carpenter finished 1-3 on the day, but reached base twice and scored the game-tying run.
Unfortunately for Southwestern, Sterling had a little two-out magic in them as well as an RBI single with two gone in the bottom of the seventh gave the Warriors the lead again. Sterling would add another in the eighth and close it down in the ninth to walk away with the 6-4 victory.
The loss moves the Builders' record to 6-6 on the season, 4-2 in KCAC play. The team will be back in action on Friday at home for another KCAC tilt against the McPherson Bulldogs. First pitch of the double header is scheduled for 12:00pm.
