This letter is for Mr. Bontrager in Hutchinson. Please take a little time and read about American history back in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s.
When you do, you will find out about a conservative Republican president named Hoover. He presided over an economy in the 1920s where 45% of the wealth in the U.S. was held by 10% of the population (like today). When the economy collapsed in 1929, Hoover’s response was to increase tariffs. Like today, that hurt every one’s economy and worsened the Depression.
In 1932 a Liberal Democrat named Franklin Roosevelt was elected. He leftist ideas, like works projects to build such public infrastructure as roads, bridges and lakes. In 1936, he pushed Social Security through Congress. During the war years of the 1940s, he became a dictator — compelling Americans to ration food, nylon, rubber and more to win a war against some very bad people.
He was so horrible that he forced people to cover windows at night in case there was bombing. Imagine that, intruding into the private homes of freedom-loving Americans. The worst of it is he did these things just to keep Americans safe and healthy. There were of course some patriotic folks who protested against such tyranny. We later found that they had been duped by Nazis for reasons that are obvious.
There is an old quote that goes "those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it." Please take a little time to brush up on history. It can be liberating.
