Here is a sampling of social media comments about stories from across the state:
We took a look at how the Kansas State Board of Education's vote to nullify Gov. Laura Kelly's decision to delay school reopening until after Labor Day was resonating across the state.
Leavenworth Times Facebook:
Jeanine Wallace: Vote them out! Every single one of them! By the looks of it the majority are in a high risk demographic and the situation is dire enough that they did a zoom meeting but couldn’t see holding schools off for an additional 3 weeks?? Hypocrites.
Khristen Hammond: You guys wouldnt even meet in person! You are going to have so many upset parents and you dont even care. We are switching to home school. You guys are ridiculous
Maralee Thompson: Wagle needs to go!! So they do a zoom meeting because it is not safe but it's ok for our children. Nuts!
Pias Wilson: Cute how they met over zoom as to not expose themselves to Covid but they can send our kids to schools!
Sam Todd: They've had this long to figure it out. What would 3 more weeks do?
Hays Daily News Facebook:
Tracy Rogers: They’re right, it should be a local decision.
Jim Leiker (Tracy Rogers): no, they're not right. The virus is not local, and therefore the response to it shouldn't be either. Local has been tried and it failed.
Danielle Welker Lummus: Get these kids back in school and ALL SCHOOL ACTIVITIES!!!!
Jean Leavitt-Walker: Thank you for replacing fear with sanity and putting our kids first
Chuck Zadina: To dangerous for them to meet in person ?
Lizzy Paris: This is sad. I hope each and every child survives this horrific epidemic. Sadly not all will and my heart is breaking for the families who are going to suffer tragic and preventable loss of precious life.
Eric Schmidt: Great news!! Lockdown Laura is only in this for political gain! The sham is starting to unfold.
Ottawa Herald Facebook:
Barb Fitzgerald Davis: Good job! Let the districts decide
Terry Turner: If parents want to keep their children at home then they still can do so.
Robin Tripkos: Ironic they'd make this decision via zoom instead of "in-person"?
Tad Ballinger: The governor should not have tried to mandate this to begin with. Local school districts are intelligent enough to know what's best for their children, not a political bureaucratic person in Topeka.
Garden City Telegram Facebook:
Nathan Meile: They did not reject delaying they rejected the order and said the local school boards should have the authority to decide much like the county health nurse because every district is different! So some schools could delay and some not but will be your local boards decision!
Zach Worf: That's weird. Why would they have an online Zoom meeting if they're discussing whether or not kids can go back to school in person. We are living in Idiocracy
JimnRose Neblett: I hope they spend entire weeks visiting classrooms and see how it all works out.
Karla Ast: As should’ve been since day 1
