Wellington boy's tennis qualifies all six to 4A state
EL DORADO, Kansas—Everyone is going to state.
Everyone for the Wellington Crusaders boys' tennis team that is.
The Crusaders wasted little time as they won both the singles and the doubles regional championships and had another finish third place and sixth place as all six players will head to Topeka for next week's Class 4A state tournament hosted by Topeka Hayden.
Kade Adams and Carson Rademacher found themselves dominating early, only dropping three games through their first two matches. They caught their first set loss to Circle's Noah Allison and Drew Middleton in the regional final. However, the pair battled back, winning the third set 6-2 and securing the region championship.
They had to get by their own teammates before getting in that final. They beat Justin Norris and Jack Wright in the semifinals in straight sets (6-0, 6-2). Norris and Wright would complete the doubles qualifications as they won third place over El Dorado's John Farley and Logan Foulkes in straight sets (6-3, 6-3).
In the singles bracket, Sophomore Jax Cornejo showed why he was the No. 1 seed in the regional as he rolled in straight sets to the regional final as well. Much like his double teammates, Cornejo dropped the second set to Winfield's Drake Lowe. However, Cornejo was too much to overcome in the third set as he won 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
It's the third time this season Cornejo has beaten Lowe.
Freshman Hunter Worley joined the rest of the bunch as he qualified sixth, beating Circle's Braden Bleich in the consolation bracket but fell to Kyler McKibban from El Dorado in straight sets.
Wellington heads back to state where they finished 14th in 2019 and 11th in 2017. It's the first time Wellington has qualified all six players since at least 2016, when the records are no longer available on the KSHSAA website.
