The Wellington boys golf team has had an incredible year with winning the KSHSAA 4A State Championship Tournament, head coach James Ginter winning Kansas Boys Golf Coach of the Year and being recognized at the Wellington City Council meeting.

Now, the Crusaders add five All-State selections to their resume. Blake Saffell and Deitrek Gill were named to the first team, then Jace Lawrence, Laken Smith and Brett Wyckoff were honorable mentions.

Wellington had the most selections in the 4A league and tied with Sacred Heart for the most through all six leagues.

Gill was the 4A individual state champion as he shot even with par and Saffell finished as the runner-up with a two-over-par score.

The three honorable mentions played a significant part in the Crusaders winning the state title. Lawrence tied for 12th, Smith tied for 14th and Wyckoff finished in 17th. The Crusaders finished with 610 points. The nearest team was State Runner-up Wamego with 642 points.

The 2021 Wellington boys gold team helped win the 13th state championship in program history and the first since 1982.
